A monument erected by the Union Pacific Railroad Co. reads as follows:

"This Stone Marks the Burial place of Six track laborers who were in the employ of the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division and, while on duty, about one mile west of here were massacred by a band of Cheyenne Indians Oct. 1867" Erected by the Union Pacific Railroad Co.

According to other records, this happened on Aug 01, 1867. A seventh (William Gould of Illinios) was buried at Fort Hays. He was taken there for medical help, but did not live.
